Colette’s Cheat Sheet

Sonic the Hedgehog 2

Code: Level Select

At the Options menu, highlight Sound Test and play sounds 19, 65, 09, 17 in order. (Left or Right changes the sound by 1, A changes it by 10, and B or C plays it.) If done correctly, a ring sound plays. Press Start while Sound Test is highlighted to return to the main menu. Then hold A and press Start. If done correctly, you are taken to a level select screen that also includes a sound test.

While paused with level select active, pressing A quits to the title screen, holding B gives slow motion, and pressing C advances one frame.

Code: Debug Mode

First, access the level select screen using the code above. At the level select screen, highlight Sound Test and play sounds 01, 09, 09, 02, 01, 01, 02, 04. If done correctly, a ring sound plays. Now hold A while pressing Start and continue holding A until the level card appears (whether you pick a level from the level select screen or start from the Options menu with Player Select highlighted). If done correctly, the score becomes hexadecimal coordinates and the timer shows a sprite count.

With debug mode active, Sonic dies normally. Pressing B enters placement mode: Sonic’s sprite becomes an object, and you can move freely with the D‑pad. In placement mode, pressing A cycles forward through objects; hold A and press C cycles backward (note that the initial A press cycles forward one object first); pressing C places the object; pressing B exits placement mode. Because debug mode also activates level select, you have the same pause options listed under Code: Level Select while paused.

Code: “Night” Mode

Unlock debug mode as described above, then hold C throughout the act’s title card animation until the level starts. This activates “Night” mode for that act, darkening background objects behind the sprite layer.

Code: All Chaos Emeralds

Access the level select screen (using the code above). At the level select screen, highlight Sound Test and play sounds 04, 01, 02, 06. If done correctly, a chaos emerald sound plays. You then have all seven chaos emeralds and, as Sonic, access to Super Sonic.

Code: 15 Continues (and Continuous Oil Ocean Music)

At the Options menu, highlight Sound Test and play sounds 01, 01, 02, 04. If done correctly, Oil Ocean Zone’s music plays continuously and cannot be interrupted until you reset the console (it overrides other sounds, and sound effects stop). If you stay on the Options menu and start the game with Player Select highlighted, you have 15 continues.

Code: Toggle Between “Tails” and “Miles”

At the main menu, press Up, Down, Down, Down, Up. If done correctly, a ring sound plays, and Tails becomes “Miles” in‑game (the trademark symbols on the SEGA and title screens disappear). Enter the code again to switch back to “Tails.”

Note: This code works as long as the number of Up presses before the first Down is odd. For example, Up, Up, Up, Down, Down, Down, Up works, but Up, Up, Down, Down, Down, Up does not.
